Understand Connecticut State Payroll Tax Filing Requirements and Withholding Forms
Employers in Connecticut are required to file Form CT-941, the Employer's Quarterly Tax Return. This form must be filed on a quarterly basis to report the total income tax withheld from employees' wages. It is due by the last day of the month following the end of each quarter. Timely submission of this form ensures compliance with state payroll tax laws.
Form CT-W3 is used by employers to reconcile the total amount of income tax withheld from employees' wages for the entire year. It must be submitted annually by January 31st to ensure the accurate reporting of all withheld wages and taxes.
The deadlines for filing various Virginia payroll tax forms depend on the frequency of your filings
If you filed 25 or more Forms W-2 for Connecticut wages, you must amend Form CT-W3 electronically, even if correcting fewer than 25 W-2 forms.
If you filed 24 or fewer Forms W-2 electronically, you are encouraged to amend electronically but can file paper forms without a waiver.
If you filed 24 or fewer paper Forms W-2, you can amend Form CT-W3 on paper and submit Forms W-2c on paper as well.
When amending on paper, label the revised Form CT-W3 as "Amended." Ensure the total Connecticut tax withheld on Form CT941 or CT941X matches the amount on Form CT-W3.
A 10% penalty is applied to any tax paid late.
First Offense: 10% penalty, up to $2,500.
Second Offense: 10% penalty, up to $10,000.
Third and Subsequent Offenses: 10% penalty.
If no tax is due, there is a $50 penalty for late filing of the return.
